Mezzanine Flooring Upgrades
Modification and safety upgrades on mezzanine flooring and stairways.
Over a number of months, our client had damaged the floor on a timber-based mezzanine platform.
We engaged with our client and assessed the situation and carried out a detailed structural survey with our engineers. The floor was calculated to be insufficient for the operation and modifications needed to be carried out. It was also revealed at this stage that the stairwell was non-compliant too.
A Safe Working Environment
Using our structural engineers report we strengthened the floor to suit the capacity required and provide a safe working environment. We also installed three steel gallow brackets to reinforce and provide additional support for the existing timber joists.
Throughout this project we had to carry out the works with minimal disruption to the business.
As we were overlaying the existing floor with additional 18mm tongue and groove boards, this meant existing stock and storage equipment would need to be removed for work to commence.
With the works planned over 2 weekends - a 4 day Bank Holiday weekend then 1 additional Saturday - our client gradually reduce the amount of stock they would normally keep to enable a manageable amount of stock to be transferred temporarily into 3 shipping containers on the client car park. This area was segregated from the public and customers with Heras fencing to ensure everyone’s safety.
Keeping everyone safe
Due to Covid 19 pandemic we also had to provide a temporary welfare unit to segregate our colleagues from client staff. Our welfare unit had rest facilities and toilet facilities that were independent on the car park area.
Working to the timeline
... and finishing earlier than planned!
We always remain conscious of making sure our clients' operations are as undisturbed as possible. After a day of setting up the site for the client to transfer stock, our fitters started on Friday morning with the target of completing phase 1 by Monday afternoon.
Hard work along with strategic planning enabled this process to be carried out swiftly, professionally, and 24 hours earlier than planned.
Over the next 4 days our client replenishes the existing and newly installed storage equipment with the stock from the containers.
We arrived the following Saturday to install the new pre-fabricated staircase. This was done with no unexpected delay. After arranging the collection of containers, the welfare unit and dismantling the Heras fencing; We handed everything back to the customer.
Containers, fencing, welfare units - everything we brought with us, was taken away.
Success Through Planning And Communication
A considerable amount of time was spent planning this project, including comprehensive site surveys. Along with regular communication, every party involved understood their part of the process.
So to conclude, clear communication, strategic planning, and a dedicated workforce enabled this project to be completed with very little issue.
Our client now has a reinforced mezzanine and staircase that has been uprated to 4.8Kn/m to ensure a safe working environment.
